The validity of the theory of active metal dissolution in pits is discussed. Measurements were made in an alcoholic solution of sulfuric acid. The results show that metal dissolution in the pits does not occur in the active part of the polarization curve, because the potential of the pit bottom is more noble than the potential region for active dissolution of the metal.
