On December 14, 1976, Professor Michal Smialowski, an outstanding Polish scientist responsible for initiating a number of scientific and technological organizations, reached his 70th birthday, and his former students, co-workers, and admirers of his work wish to help him celebrate his jubilee year. It is also a fitting occasion to recognize his contributions to the world of corrosion science and engineering.

Professor Smialowski studied chemistry at the Technical University of Lvov, and worked there as an assistant until 1930. He then moved to the Technical University in Warsaw, where he worked for 8 years as a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Metallurgy, under the supervision of two prominent metallurgists: Professors Broniewski and Czochralski. During that time, he began to be more and more attracted to studies of metallurgy and structural corrosion. He received his PhD in 1938 on a thesis entitled "Studies of Crystallization, Plastic Deformation, and Recrystallization...
