Everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it, so it is with the state of technology. We seem to be constantly complaining about the nation’s activities in the energy area and along other technological fronts. We complain too about the technical activities within our own respective organizations; in fact, it seems to be common to be in a state of constant complaint.

One of the more pleasant periods in my early technical career was the first four years out of undergraduate school which I spent with Admiral Rickover on his staff in Washington, DC. I was more than wet behind the ears and green. I was as impressionable as I was lacking in general engineering competence despite the fact that I had graduated from a good engineering college.
