The dissolution behavior of chromium carbide (Cr2 3C6) and titanium carbide (TiC) has been determined in boiling 2N H2SO4. The results are used to rationalize the effect of heat treatment on the dissolution behavior of AISI 304 stainless steel and titanium-stabilized AISI 321 stainless steel. Observations made during evaluation tests for intergranular corrosion of stainless steels are discussed in terms of the dissolution behavior of the stainless steels.
