“Corrosion Coupons” or “Steel Test Plates” are removable steel plates buried near a pipeline or other structure, on which it is desired to know the rate of corrosion which takes place over a period of one or more years, due to soil action, stray railway currents, long line currents, etc.
The coupons are installed in pairs at the following locations :
The data obtained by the annual study of a series of coupons covering a period of years are used to estimate the probable life, or date of the first failure of the pipe, and the economic feasibility of applying one of the different types of pipe protection now available.
The coupon serial numbers, installation and removal dates, pit depths and other data, and a map showing the location of the coupon station in the field are recorded in Figure 1.
