Organic Lewis bases such as alcohols, ethers and amines inhibit the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of AISI 4340 steel foil in aqueous solutions of hydrochloric acid. The concentrations of base necessary for inhibition are greater than those found effective for the inhibition of SCC of Ti-6Al-4V foil in CH3OH-H2O-Cl solutions. The evidence for the existence of Lewis acid sites in the oxide surface film on 4340 is less convincing than the experimental evidence for the existence of such sites on Ti-6Al-4V.
