MgF2, CaF2, and SrF2 were exposed to simulated industrial chlorination atmospheres. The gas streams containing Cl2 and/or He mixed with water vapor and/or furnace gas (CO + CO2) flowed at 220 cc/min through a 2.54 cm ID vitreous silica furnace tube. Behavior of the metal fluorides, as determined in the temperature range 500 to 750 C (932 to 1382 F), was compared with the corrosion of commercial grade nickel under the same conditions. MgF2 was the only material that performed appreciably better than nickel.
