Ultrasonic oscillations were found to markedly accelerate the fracture in liquid mercury of Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V and Ti-6Al-4V alloys. Unalloyed RMI 70 titanium was unaffected. Likewise, fracture by CH3OH-HCl-H2O solution was unaffected. The results are taken as indicating a stress-sorption failure mechanism.
