The anodic dissolution of Mo was studied in HCl-KCl solutions at 25 C (77 F). The apparent valences of Mo ions going into solution were approximately six. Slightly lower values were obtained in HCl solutions, the more pronounced changes occurring in the higher acid concentrations. The resultant ions in solution were Mo-VI. The Mo surface appears to be covered with an oxide whose approximate composition is Mo2O5. The anodic dissolution is controlled by the oxidation of this oxide to MoO3.
