The possibility for anodically protecting metals is described in terms of degrees of passivity, passivation diagrams, a passivity index, and a passivating parameter. The effects of material and environmental variables are outlined. The passive state of iron is expressed in terms of a variable-composition Fe3O4-γ-Fe2O3 spinel phase and also in terms of water in the double layer being oxidized to hydroxy- and oxyligands.
