In Figure 7 of this paper, the measurement of “δ” for use in the Pure Bending Equation is shown incorrectly. The deflection of the specimen, “δ”, when used for calculations of stress by the Pure Bending Equation should be measured as shown in the sketch below. A rigidly mounted dial micrometer has proven to be a simple method for determining the difference in positions of the unstressed and the stressed surface of the specimen.
