A potentiostat is described which has outstanding control precision, long term stability and current capacity. It has excellent frequency response, is very reliable and easily used by laboratory personnel. The ability to “scan” a pre-selected range of potentials makes it a highly effective electrochemical research tool for studying current-potential relationships, time dependent effects and polarization phenomena. Performance characteristics of this instrument include: Precision of control: ± 0.5 mv. Stability: ± 0.5 mv 10-14 day periods, ± 0.1 mv 2-6 hour period. Sensitivity (i.e., potential change required to obtain 100 percent output): ± 25 microvolts. Noise and ripple: 150 microvolts RMS. Current capacity: -10 amperes and +5 amperes at 10 volts and ± 5 amperes at ± 20 volts. Response time: 3-4 microseconds for a+5 or -10 ampere ± 10 volt pulse to reach 90 percent.
