This article describes a statistical analysis of stress-corrosion endurances on specimens of Al-5 percent Mg alloy in an anodic test, using both intensiostatic and potentiostatic control. Various types of frequency distribution were considered and it was found that only the log-normal distribution was completely consistent with the experimental data.
Although fairly good agreement was also obtained with the normal distribution it was rejected because of the difficulty of attributing any physical significance to negative endurances.
The conclusion that endurance is log-normally distributed supports earlier work and reinforces the earlier conclusion that the geometric mean is the best representative value of endurance.
