THE SUBJECT MATTER of this paper is based on unpublished work which is in fact somewhat incomplete. It then appears preferable to present at this time a rather general discussion of this subject, and to include only the data directly pertinent to that discussion. It is regretted that such data cannot be accompanied by precise statements as to their limits of accuracy, but it may be confidently stated that they are sufficiently accurate for. purposes of this general discussion.

It is hoped that in spite of the lack of complete data in this presentation, some information of immediate value will be found herein, and that in any case this discussion may suggest possibilities for additional lines of investigation by other laboratories interested in the general field of corrosion.
