The general corrosion rate and the stationary potential of iron in strong ammonium and ammonium plus sodium nitrate solutions are studied as functions of pH. The rate and the potential is found essentially independent of pH over the range 3-6. Anodic and cathodic polarization curves are plotted for iron in 5 N ammonium nitrate solution, and the effect of polarization on the corrosion rate is described. The probable mechanism of reactions accompanying the corrosion process is discussed. A certain similarity to the behavior of iron in dilute nitric acid is concluded. 6.2.2, 3.4.7, 4.3.6
