The breakdown of the oxide films formed on carbon melted zirconium and Zircaloy-2 has been studied using optical and electron microscopes. The nature of the breakaway process is illustrated and an explanation is offered for the effect of tin, iron, chromium and nickel alloying additions on corrosion resistance of carbon melted zirconium. 3.2.3
