Rubber and synthetic rubber linings have been in sea water service for 10 years with no visible change in the compound. Synthetic fuel oil delivery hose normally lasts eight years or more. Generally, the hose must be replaced because of external abrasion rather than breaking down of the rubber. Hard rubber pipe and fittings subjected to salt water and underground use have been in service for over 50 years.
If rubber lining for steel is damaged or torn in service, the lining usually can be patched by the applicator and quickly returned to service.
The price of lining, including steel preparations, is approximately $2.50 to $4 per square foot, based on flat surfaces. The price would be higher for more complicated shapes and tanks which would include a large number of steel bars, channels, supports, etc.
