Mother of invention
Dovetail Workwear is the brainchild of moms Kate Day, Kyle Begley, and Sara DeLuca. After meeting on the PTA, Kate and Kyle launched a landscaping company but couldn’t find pants that met their fit, function, and durability needs. Enter Sara, another PTA mom and also a veteran of the apparel industry... What began as a labor of love is now the largest exclusively women’s workwear company in the US and Canada. As Kate puts it, “we make the pants nobody would make for us.”
Sisterhood of the traveling workpants
As with all Dovetail Workwear designs, Maven Maternity was extensively tested by professional—in this case, pregnant—women in the field. Early prototypes were passed along from expecting mother to mother. Their feedback helped refine the design. Dovetail Workwear weartesters range from women who work construction jobs to those who farm, fish, make, fix, build, and raise livestock, as well other children in their human families. As Mary, a Wyoming rancher explains, “My life is already very physical on the farm. Pregnancy is an added challenge when you have to move and bend and handle animals. But our jobs don’t stop when we’re pregnant. Yet you go look at a rack of Carhartt and it’s like we’re invisible.”
Pants and pandemics
Maven Maternity is the latest offering by DoveLab, the incubator for Dovetail Workwear’s most innovative new products. First delivery run of maternity pants stock was slated for spring 2020, but Covid-19 supply chain delays have pushed the shipping date to September. So why a spring press release? “We wanted to give our customers the good news on Mother’s Day,” says Director of Product Development and Co-Founder, Sara DeLuca. “Working women have been asking us for maternity workwear since we began this company, but we’ve kept Mum (ha!) during the extensive development phase of Maven Maternity, to be sure we get this right. We’re asking customers to wait a bit longer, but we believe this pant will be worth it.”
