OSHA Unveils ‘Top 10’ Workplace Safety Violations of 2017

December 18, 2017

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced the preliminary release of its “Top 10” list for most frequently cited workplace safety violations in the 2017 fiscal year.

Patrick Kapust, deputy director of OSHA’s directorate of enforcement programs, presented the list on the exposition floor as part of the 2017 NSC Congress & Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana. The event, run by the National Safety Council (NSC), is the world’s largest annual gathering of safety professionals.

While the rankings for OSHA's Top 10 most cited violations are often similar from year to year, the No. 9 violation of “Fall Protection – Training Requirements” is new to the list in 2017.

Safety Blueprint

“The OSHA Top 10 is more than just a list, it is a blueprint for keeping workers safe,” said NSC president and CEO Deborah A.P. Hersman. “When we all work together to address hazards, we can do the best job possible to ensure employees go home safely each day.”

The NSC is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to eliminate preventable deaths at work, in homes and communities, and on the road through leadership, research, education, and advocacy.

Founded in 1913 and chartered by the U.S. Congress, NSC advances this mission by partnering with businesses, government agencies, elected officials, and the public
