Dow Corning Launches New Family of Foam Control Agents for Waterborne Inks, OPVs and Paints Free

December 3, 2024

Formulators of waterborne inks, overprint varnishes (OPVs) and low/medium PVC paints can now achieve efficient foam control with fewer worries about the formation of surface defects.

The use of new low-VOC binders, the reduction of co-solvent in formulations, and demands for increased speed in paint production and application make foam control an ongoing challenge for formulators of waterborne paints and inks. Defoaming is easy to achieve – but, in some cases, incompatibility between the defoamer and the formulation often leads to film defects, such as pinholes, cratering, fisheyes and dewetting.

Dow Corning’s new family of waterborne antifoams includes a range of solutions that offer high levels of efficiency with low levels of defects.

Dow Corning 69 Additive, Dow Corning 8590 Additive, Dow Corning 8603 Additive, Dow Corning 8610 Additive and Dow Corning® 8628 Additive are easily dispersible silicone compounds and emulsions designed for use in waterborne inks, OPVs, and industrial and architectural paints. They offer a good balance of efficiency, compatibility and antifoaming performance at low dosage levels. Additionally, all are APEO-free and low-VOC.

Formulators of water-based inks and coatings now have an array of antifoam choices to meet a wide range of foam control challenges:

  • Dow Corning 69 Additive and Dow Corning 8590 Additive for most typical foaming issues
  • Dow Corning 8603 Additive for more challenging foam problems
  • Dow Corning 8610 Additive for systems with a higher co-solvent level
  • Dow Corning 8590 Additive and Dow Corning® 8610 Additive for low-temperature applications
  • Dow Corning 8628 Additive for excellent defoaming and compatibility

“We are applying our extensive expertise in silicone-based antifoam chemistry to bring ‘best-in-class’ antifoam technology to the industries we serve – and because we recognize that no one antifoam agent will work in all systems, this new portfolio includes a range of products designed to address foaming challenges under a variety of conditions,” said Dow Corning Global Segment Leader Chris Wall. “Furthermore, we are committed to developing innovative solutions and are looking forward to collaborating with our customers in the ink, OPV, and paint and coatings industries to identify the right antifoam additive solutions for their specific formulation and processing needs.”

Dow Corning offers a comprehensive selection of innovative silicon-based additives, resins and binders for the coatings industry. In addition to materials, the company provides supportive services and solutions tailored to the specific business needs of the global coatings industry.
