Sufficient water must be used to prevent topcoat deformation and splitting. Once the lead pipe splits away from the pipe string exiting the coating area, internal quench accelerates the pipe cool down. Water must not be sprayed into the pipe while it is still joined to the rest of the string — it can flow back to the coating-application area, cooling the pipe too soon for FBE cure and dripping into the recycled FBE. The mastic also may contain chemicals to inhibit corrosion of the metals as they are leached out. One method for preventing galvanic corrosion of piping at dissimilar metal joints is the isolating flange...

A key to holiday prevention with any type of coating is in the handling and installation process. FBE pipecoatings have demonstrated resistance to damage both during installation and after burial. Real-time examples and laboratory tests include: (A) single-layer FBE coating scratched, but not penetrated after directional bore installation; (B1) impact tests — dual coating systems provide (B2) even better impact resistance than stand-alone FBE systems; (C) FBE coatings have high-compression strength and resist penetration damage; (D) practical experience shows limited damage during a controlled installation process.
