The editors of Corrosion Management for a Sustainable Future, working in DNV’s Strategic Research and Innovation group at the time, examined facets of the materials lifecycle to help identify strategies that could be undertaken to mitigate the exponential increase in materials extraction and consumption that have characterized the rise of the modern world.
From this activity, a ‘materials stewardship’ strategy was formed, composed of the elements of dematerialization (doing more with less), durability (corrosion and risk management), design for multiple lifecycles, and diversion of waste (recycling and industrial symbiosis).
