Abstract
This paper is a review of the corrosion risk assessment, structural considerations, and engineering solutions for the steel reinforced structural elements within an aging building that exhibit accelerated corrosion in corrosive environments. We will discuss various factors that affect the remaining life of the structure including structural issues, concrete cover, and accelerated corrosion due to chlorides and carbonation. One or more combinations of these factors could potentially result in the progressive failure and eventual collapse of an aging building. The authors will provide case histories and guidelines on how to protect the corroded reinforcements with corrosion engineering solutions that are not as costly as replacement. These include cathodic protection and protective coatings.
