Abstract
On August 1, 2024, AMPP published SP21511-1-2024 Laser Ablation Standard for the Surface Preparation of Ferrous Metal, Pulsed Laser (SP21511), and AMPP Guide 21611-2024 Pulsed Laser Ablation Technical Guide for Ferrous Metal Substrates (21611). Used together, these documents are designed to educate surface preparation professionals and support informed decision-making for what, when, why, and how to use pulsed laser ablation (PLA) technology safely and effectively. Unlike other traditional methods, PLA is a dry, media-free, non-kinetic, directed energy process used to remove coatings, hazardous materials, contaminants, and clean substrates for corrosion control. SP21511 specifies the process standards required when PLA is applied to treat three (3) possible initial conditions and achieve specific end states. 21611 contains detailed technical information essential to support regulatory compliance and SP21511 for suitable applications.
