Advanced technology is now available to improve challenging corrosion control maintenance applications. A new method, validated by extensive testing, promises to save time, reduce costs while also mitigating EH&S hazards associated with traditional abrasive media blasting. This novel technique is particularly effective for projects involving the removal of coatings containing lead and other heavy metals from structural steel. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), The Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC) with The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The University of Virginia (UVA), studied the use of Heat Induction Coating Removal (ICR) with Pulsed Laser Ablation Coating Removal(1), hereafter (LA) together “ICRLA”, for bridge steel maintenance involving lead containing coatings as an alternative to media blasting for coating removal. ICRLA is a two-step, media-free, process adaptation using two proven technologies. First, ICR instantly delaminates bulk coatings for removal in large strips. Next, PLA cleans the base metal of remaining coating residues, surface rust, and contaminants. Study showed ICRLA prepared surfaces have equivalent adhesion of organic/ in-organic zinc rich primers to grit blasted steel surfaces
